Shelby Parks and Recreation Reels in
Over 250 Kids at Fishing Derby
June 8, 2009 – The weather was great and the fish were biting on Saturday at Heritage Garden Lake in Shelby Township. Over 250 anglers age 15 & under tested their fishing skills at the 23rd Annual Youth Fishing Derby which brings out young and old to enjoy one of America’s favorite leisure sports. Support from the generous sponsors Roumell & Lange, PLC and the Detroit Area Steelheaders made it possible to award prizes for the largest fish in four age groups, for the casting contest, and for several door prizes. A special thank you also goes to workers from Caribou Coffee’s 26 Mile and Van Dyke location that brought and served free coffee to the grownups.
Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Director Dave Moore, Board of Trustees member Michael Flynn, and Shelby Township Fire Chief Gene Shepherd were on hand to measure each fish, while staff from the Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department ran the casting contest, handled registration and tallied the results. Members from the Shelby Township Fire and Police Departments were also present to handle an emergency situation, should one occur.
